Archive for November, 2007

Well, today was the day, I graduated with the rest of the secondary school cohort with a BEd (Education). It was an awesome lovely day. Crisp, cold but incredibly sunny. Yay and a woot woot to God!

It was really nice to see all my school buddies for the past year. 2006 and so far 2007 has been an incredibly whimsical journey. I met some decent fun people during my practicum (all of them like to make fun of the fact that I’m an oldie) and also forged some cool friendships with my cohort. Like my penguin loving dancing friend K. Also Mr. “Jahhhhhnice” Kwan. I remember starting the year being really freaked out thinking that I couldn’t hack the school year. I wasn’t sure I had enough brain cells to be able to really get through the program.

Teachers and instructors kept repeating the idea that “Teaching is not for everyone” and I got a little paranoid that perhaps I would be one of those 5% of people that fail out of the program. I dreaded the short practicum but my sponsor teachers turned out to be terrifically great support to me. I discovered that I enjoyed teaching. It was a great feeling to have.

My niece was great throughout the whole ceremony.  Yay!! She did the happy dance with me.  Gandalf seemed to open up the ceremony which was interesting.  I was worried I would trip but alas I didn’t.

My friend also made me jump in my gown.  But I took a look at the pic and it looks like was praising the Lord in a charismatic gospel church.  Except I’m Asian. I don’t really know how that works. When she sends me the pic, I’ll post it up and see what your opinions are.

Well, what have I been up to? I have been sewing my little butt away. Or I should say fingers because that’s what is hurting the most besides my bum.

I love hand embroidery and it was fun to do it in front of the computer but note to self, don’t do it in a cold house. That’s how hand cramping starts. So I have to put on gloves when I’m doing it. I have two fingerless gloves that I love so it works well.

I’m working on some products for lilsoak that will finally be showcased to the public at UBC at the end of the month. C and I are going to share a booth and sell some goods. We’ll be at the SUB (Student Union Building) the last week of November. Come visit!

I would give you a sneak peak but with no macro camera, I can’t really do it justice. I’m not going to be overly ambitious but I’m going to stick to a few goods. Mainly just luggage tags and a couple of cute lunchbag/bookbag totes.

I’ll hopefully post some up on my etsy shop after the fact as well.

I’m also on the hook for making a quilt for a friend’s baby. I had the design but it was in my little design book, that was in my bag that got stolen in Toronto. 😦

Okay, okay we can’t end on a sad note. Let’s bring the cheer on! Contrary to popular belief, Vancouver is not always raining and yesterday was a great day to spend it outdoors. There is a park that is just a 5 min walk from my house and I decided to bring my camera instead of going for a run as I have been meaning to take pictures of all the sweet things to see. This is just wet your appetite for even more cute goodness that I’ll post later.

What are you looking at?

Poseur Squirrel

I’ll upload more pics to flickr after all the sewing!!

PS.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY COUSIN RY AND MISS N!  ALSO A BELATED BIRTHDAY SHOUT OUT (AND YES WITH CAPS ON I’M SHOUTING) TO MR. TP

Well, I know Ontario is famous for their apples but for some reason I don’t dig eating fruits as much as I do as living here in Vancouver. Last year, I went to the UBC Apple Fest. It was awesomely delicious! I tried more than 13 different types of apples. Yum!

I had coffee with Snuze the other day but she had to go Kin’s Farm first and I saw an abundance of apple species: golden delicious, red delicious, grany smith, fuji etc. I really like the Yoko (?) apple that I tried but it’s difficult to find that in the local grocers. I wish I remembered about the applefest this year because I would have bought loads of apples. I even tried one that tasted like a pear!

So I have to settle for one favourite: the Cameo. Slightly tart but an eatable tart. It’s sweet and crunchy with the edge of tartness at the end.

yum in my tumI love the fact that it’s unwaxed too. I mean, it doesn’t look as “pretty” but it’s still easy to figure out which ones will taste fantastic. I just love living here in Vancouver for the fruit and veg factor. Seriously. This summer I had more fruit than I ever had in my 7 years in Toronto. It’s cheaper here!!

I even had fresh figs care of my mom’s friend. I remember paying an arm and leg for figs at the local grocer’s at Yonge/Eg.

Happy eating! Crunch crunch crunch.

It’s freezing here in Vancouver! I think the wacky weather of TO really had an effect on me. I came back to a lovely bed and ooodles of laundry to do. The only bad part about coming home is unpacking. I hate unpacking my suitcase.

I had to borrow a bag from Nic because there were so many books to carry back. I was well over my limit for one of my suitcases. It felt like a boulder.

Westjet didn’t have too many channels on their satellite but I ended up falling asleep througout most of the flight. The air pressure in the airplane cause my bag of ringolos to puff out massively, like one of those mini balloons you see on sale for Valentine’s day. I resisted opening those as it was for my bro and sis-in-law.

I spent the first few days getting all my id taken care of and today they sent me my driver’s license. I am still a little jet lagged as I feel like sleeping by 7pm.

I went to city hall because I entered a few pictures for a contest for scenes of Richmond. You were supposed to send a picture depicting the following themes about Richmond:

  • Cultural Diversity
  • Gardens & Landscapes
  • Great Places & Spaces
  • Healthy Living & Wellness
  • Outdoor Recreation & Play
  • Nature & Environment
  • Sustainable Communities

This is one of the pictures that I sent in:

cows

It may seem boring to you all but to me, it brings a giggle because these cows are surrounded by complete suburbia and they were, well, out of place. But at the same time, it made sense for them to be there and I don’t think the community thinks twice about it. I think there are times when I feel like that.

I don’t think I got any honourable mentions since I haven’t really been practising my camera skills lately. I saw some of the pictures though, some are quite gorgeous. The top 8 winners get to have their pictures printed on these banners which are then put up all over the city on the lamp posts.

Does this make you want to come visit me in Richmond? Everything is only 5 minutes away! 🙂
